        Lost Coast
        • The Lost Coast - Directors Cut (Ethan Newberry, 2018, 0:07:36) The Ginger Runner has made another movie. This time the focus is on an FKT - and a wild landscape. When the Pacific Coast Highway (also known as Highway #1 and #101) was planned, there was a problem 200 km north of San Francisco: Between Rockport and Eureka, geology and topology were so complex that the construction of a coastal road was simply not possible. Thus a piece of unspoilt coast has remained here, rough, sometimes dangerous, because at high tide the water reaches up to the rocks that rise steeply. Wouldn't that be a great territory for an FKT? Due to the complexity of planning (tides, weather) and the imminent danger, so far there was only one FKT attempt at this stretch of coast: By Leor Pantilat together with runner/traveler Rickey Gates. After his victory at the Tarawera, Dylan Bowman has now decided to attack this FKT. Who could be a better companion than Rickey Gates? And who could be a better filmmaker for this adventure than Ethan Newberry AKA Ginger Runner.

         Courtney Dauwalter
        • The Ultra Addict (Max Romey/Salomon, 2019, 0:10:08) Courtney Dauwalter took second place at the Tahoe 200 last year (and of course won the women's category in 49 hours and 54 minutes). Nevertheless - not everything went according to plan. Hardly anyone in the Trail and Ultrarunning elite can describe so objectively and unpathetically what happens when a race goes south. Coutney writes: „The plan for Tahoe 200 was simple: Hold a pace that’s a bit uncomfortable and move efficiently through the aid stations. Don’t dilly-dally. Finish in less than 48 hours. Real quickly, body & brain revolted against the plan. I sat at aid stations trying to calm a feisty stomach and get my head in the game. Luckily, I had a fantastic crew along for the ride who were ready with all sorts of food options and plenty of jokes while we shifted our race goals. You can always pivot, adapt and learn for next time.“
        • The Source (Dream Lens Media LLC, 2019, 0:39:19) The Source is a documentary film that explores elite ultra runner Courtney Dauwalter's source of will. • Mike Foote 61k (The North Face, 2018, 0:05:37) Not really a running film - but a film about an ultra runner. Mike Foote loves adventurous racing. Really hard, long races through impassable terrain. He took second place three times at the Hardrock 100 and in 2012 he was third at the UTMB. Then, three years later, together with Mike Wolfe, he ventured to the "Crown Traverse", 600 miles from Missoula, Montana to Banff, Alberta (Canada) over the "crown" of the Rocky Mountains. Compared to all this, his current project is truly civilized: He wants to set a new record for most vertical meters on skis. The film documents this project.

He asks himself: How inclusive is trailrunning? “Sometimes I feel like people aren’t happy to see a black guy winning in a predominantly white sport…I’m challenging the status quo. Maybe it makes you uncomfortable, but that’s great because maybe you’ll be a better human being, and you can accept a winner based on the fact that they won and you don’t care what color their skin is.”

            Thabang Madiba
            • Thabang (Salomon/Dean Leslie, 2019, 0:13:15) Trailrunning brings together very different people with different backgrounds. Is that really the case? In the USA, it is frequently discussed that trailrunners are a rather homogeneous section of the population: White, middle class and above all: runners from the so-called "First World", the wealthy industrial nations. There are reasons for this. Above all, there are hardly any role models outside this "white, middle class, first world" that are key as condensation nuclei for a movement. This could change in South Africa: with Thabang Madiba. He originates from a township in the countryside. And he lives for his sport: trail running.

After a win at the CCC 2015 he came back the following year to get the UTMB right. Since then he returned every year with the aim to become the first American to win this race. His signature racing style is reminiscent of Steve Prefontaine: Going out hard, leading from the front - either to win the race or to crash and burn on the way to the finish line. What drives him? How are his roots back home in Pennsylvania influencing him and his running? And why is trying to conquer the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc against some of the best competitors in the world?

                  • Par for the Course: Mirna Valoria at the Broken Arrow Skyrace (Kody Kohlman, 2019, 0:03:40) What defines a Trailrunner? Is it the body? We focus on it by training and nutrition. This focus on the body may give us a clear picture of what a trailrunner looks like: Slim, athletic, not a gram of fat. This is even more true for skyrunning, because the trails are steeper, higher and harder. Mirna Valerio aka Mirnavator doesn't match this stereotype at all. She wonders: When do we think that we belong somewhere, that we are in the right place? When we see other people that have something in common with us. That's why at some point she decided to encourage other people. By doing what she likes most: Running! She wants to show that everyone can shift their individual limits. No, she really doesn't have the best conditions, has to carry much more weight over the 26k and 1800 meters of incline than most other runners at Broken Arrow Skyrace. And of course she is slower. But she gives her best - with HER body, with HER abilities. Running gives her the experience: We are so much more than our body. The sky is not the limit - your mind is.

As the born-and-raised Illinoisan navigated this route in Wisconsin, which creates a winding hook between the state’s west boundary at St. Croix Falls and Potawatomi State Park out on the Door County peninsula of the state’s east side, Woltering’s daily menu included 8,000 calories in gas-station hamburgers and didn’t stop there. His most cherished meals were gifted by supporters, who followed along virtually and showed up.

                    • Schmerzfrei (Lukas Sörgel, 2019, in German, 0:41:11) Tim Wortmann is an ultra runner. In summer 2018 he prepares for the Tor des Geants. That means: 120-200 kilometers per training week, with many meters of ascent and descent. He spends spends major parts of his training on the mountain. Then, on 19 June 2018, he takes a big plunge during a training run when descending from the Schaufelspitze, a mountain in the Karwendel range.  Although he manages to make an emergency call and can be rescued, after this fall nothing is as it was before. Operations, rehabilitation, another operation. Tim is fighting. There won't be an easy "back to square one". He will have to find and go new ways. His goal: PAINFREE. This film follow Tim back to the Schaufelspitze one year after the accident. He wants to understand why he took the fall - but this trip was also a goal he set himself to work towards in therapy and rehabilitation. A great and authentic film by runner and film maker Lukas Sörgel.

                        • The Human Bean: 40 Days on a Tin Bean Diet (Beau Miles, 2020, 0:26:43) Inspired by a half-page scene in John Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat, where a family of poor, super healthy kids eat an almost exclusive bean diet, Beau decides to do much the same thing. Eating only the contents of 191 tins of beans over 40 days transforms Beau into The Human Bean, and in doing so gives him a front row seat into how one food, totally and utterly, dictates how he feels. Beau uses his intimate knowledge of running to compare his former self to his bean-self, logging lacklustre training for an ultramarathon that he plans on running during the final day of the experiment. Epiphanies are had, saddles are blazed, and genuine insight emerges from what is strangely appealing day-to-day of mediocrity.
                        • A Mile an Hour: Running a Different Kind of Marathon (Beau Miles, 2018, 0:17:12) A different kind of marathon; running one lap an hour, for 24hrs, around my perfectly mile long block. The rest of the time I do as much as possible; making things, odd jobs, fixing stuff. It's about running, doing, and thinking.
